Gen 1 and Gen 2 (2015–2018): The Origin Story
Oura launched on Kickstarter in 2015 and shipped its chunky first ring to backers in 2016 — a sleep tracker first and foremost. The Gen 2 (2018) slimmed the design dramatically and is the ring that put Oura on the map (famously worn by athletes and even royals). Both are long discontinued and no longer supported by the current app experience.
Gen 3 (November 2021): The Modern Formula
The Gen 3 added what defines Oura today: 24/7 heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen sensing, nighttime temperature tracking for illness and cycle insights, and — controversially — the membership model ($5.99/month) required for full features. It came in two shapes, Heritage (flat edge) and Horizon (round). Oura Ring 4 (October 2024): Titanium and Smart Sensing
The Ring 4 moved to an all-titanium body inside and out, recessed the sensor bumps for comfort, expanded sizing to 4–15, and introduced Smart Sensing — algorithms that pick the best signal pathways as the ring shifts on your finger. Oura Ring 5 (June 2026): The New Flagship
Released June 4, 2026, the Ring 5 is the biggest physical redesign yet:
- Much smaller: about 6.1mm wide and 2.3mm thick, weighing as little as ~2g in smaller sizes — a dramatic cut from the Ring 4
- Better accuracy: more powerful LEDs and 12 signal pathways improve overnight and workout heart-rate tracking
- Battery: rated up to 6–9 days depending on size, plus an optional charging case for topping up on the go
- New health features: GLP-1 medication tracking, nighttime breathing-pattern monitoring, blood-pressure trends, and smarter AI insights
- Price: $399 in Silver or Black; $499 for Gold, Stealth, Brushed Silver, or Deep Rose
Membership stays $5.99/month ($69.99/year), and the ring is FSA/HSA-eligible in the US.
Which Oura Ring Should You Buy in 2026?
- Buying new today: the Ring 5 is the one to get — the comfort and accuracy gains are exactly what a ring you wear 24/7 needs.
- On a budget: a discounted Ring 4 still runs the same app and membership and remains a great tracker.
- Gen 3 owners: upgrading to the Ring 5 is a genuine leap; upgrading to a Ring 4 now makes little sense with the 5 out.
